BICYCLE EDUCATION

"Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles."

John Forester, Effective Cycling

You already know how to ride your bike...

...now learn to drive it! The chances are that many cyclists have never learned to drive their bike safely amid motorized traffic. And experienced cyclists can benefit from a refresher of the basic rules of cycling safety. Laws and conditions on the road change over years.

Following the success of our first L.A.B.-equivalent Road One course in 2007, we are offering four courses in 2008, entitled the Better Biking Series. The course curriculum was developed by the League of American Bicyclists and is taught by League-certified Cycling instructors Jim Nicholson (LCI#1625) and Kevin Ruane (LCI#1624). These courses are designed to help you feel safer in negotiating our busy streets and highways.

Better Biking I is the introductory cycling education course and gives cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. The course covers bicycle safety checks, fixing a flat, on-bike skills and crash avoidance techniques and includes a student manual. This fast-paced, eight-hour course prepares cyclists for a full understanding of vehicular cycling. A more complete description of the course curriculum can be found here.

Better Biking II is a more advanced, two-day, course designed for more experienced cyclists. Better Biking I is an excellent introduction to this course but can be waived, depending upon the experience of the individual cyclist. A more complete description of the course curriculum can be found here.

Bicycle Commuting is a three hour course designed for cyclist wishing to begin using their bicycle for transportation and making a change to their commuting lifestyle. A more complete description of the course curriculum can be found here.

In addition to these scheduled courses, the instructors are available to teach small groups and individual instruction can be arranged. Contact us for details.
